Dutch renewable energy consultancy Pondera will advise developer Saare Wind Energy on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for their Saaremaa offshore wind farm in Estonian waters. The project could have an installed capacity of over 1,000 MW.
The development of the Saaremaa project started in 2015. A maximum of 100 wind turbines are planned in an area of up to 200 km2 south-west of the Estonian Island Saaremaa. The initiator of the project is Saare Wind Energy in which Van Oord became shareholder in October 2020.
The Estonian government decided in May 2020 that Saare Wind Energy could proceed with the application procedure for the environmental permit and the accompanying environmental impact assessment. Pondera will now use their expertise in advising Saare Wind Energy on the EIA and the required research.
The location of the wind farm, with good wind resources, could become a hybrid project, with interconnectors to neighbouring countries Latvia and Sweden.
