Nature organisations Natuur & Milieu and North Sea Foundation (Stichting De Noordzee) will receive 8.5 million euro in funding from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery. De funding will be used for their joint project, Rich North Sea (De Rijke Noordzee).
The Rich North Sea project aims to ensure that the growth of offshore wind farms goes hand in hand with nature enhancement. During a pilot project last year, an artificial reef structure containing adult oysters was installed within the Luchterduinen offshore wind farm. The reef structure is being monitored to investigate the optimum underwater conditions for nature development within offshore wind farms.
With the funding, it is now possible for the first time to do research on a large scale. The two nature organisations plann to place artificial reefs at 5 locations in Dutch offshore wind farms. The projects will contribute to providing a blueprint for underwater nature restoration at all offshore wind farms which can then be applied when constructing new installations.
